Job Description: Director of Policy and Research

SUMMARY

The State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) is seeking a Director of Policy and Research to assist with its advocacy and technical assistance efforts around Race to the Top implementation. This role requires a great deal of flexibility and drive, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and a positive team orientation. This position provides an invaluable opportunity to be immersed in and affect education reforms at the state and national level.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strategic thought leadership on education policy issues affecting Tennessee and the nation
  • Lead and manage the research and analysis required to produce SCORE policy memos and education reports on key education topics affecting Tennessee
  • Produce talking points, briefings, research notes, and PowerPoint presentations for both internal and external audiences
  • Conduct various forms of research including phone and in-person interviews as well as statistical analysis of state and national education data
  • Represent SCORE in meetings, coalitions, panels and at conferences
  • Analyze, synthesize, and summarize dense and complex information accurately, clearly, and within a short time-frame
  • Meet with key education stakeholders across the state to both gather input for research and then help ensure that research is put into practice
  • Supervise both graduate and undergraduate interns
  • Potentially assist states and districts with grant-writing
  • Provide additional project support including but not limited to RFP preparation and special event coordination

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

SCORE is looking for an extremely bright, dedicated professional with a passion for improving education in Tennessee and across the nation. Candidates must have experience in project management and managing multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced and high-intensity environment. Candidates must demonstrate ability to think in innovative ways. Candidates must possess 3-5 years of experience in Education Policy. Since this role provides excellent on-the-job training, candidates are expected to be fast-learners who are flexible and team-oriented, have strong interpersonal skills, and have proficient-to-advanced skills with MS Office suite. Experience with data analysis, statistics, and familiarity with education policy issues are preferred. A master’s or professional degree is preferred but not required.

COMPENSATION

Compensation will be competitive based on the candidate’s previous experience and credentials.

SCORE’s mission is to work with state and local governments to encourage sound policy decisions in public education and to advance innovative state-level education reforms. Based at Vanderbilt University’s John Seigenthaler Center, SCORE advocates for thoughtful education policies and provides technical assistance as those policies are implemented at a statewide level.
