Our challenge in public education is clear. Nationwide, just over 70% of students graduate from high school — and only half of those graduates leave prepared to succeed in college, career and life.
In Tennessee, the statistics are even more alarming. Roughly three-quarters of Tennessee eighth-graders are not proficient in mathematics and reading, according to the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).
Good news is: The Volunteer State is making bold strides toward improvement. Higher academic standards are helping more students master the basics like reading and math. And Tennessee is leading the nation in education reform through Race to the Top.
New policies and programs will help. But your leadership — and the commitment of teachers, parents and kids — is what really matters.
